Our nationally recognised MSF50222 Diploma of Interior Design will help take your design skills to another level. Equip yourself with the essential skills to stand out and make your mark on the exciting world of interior design.

If you are looking to launch a career in interior design but have minimal experience, this course is the perfect way to get the skills, knowledge and qualification you need to achieve this.

Alternatively, if you are already working in the design industry and want to take the next step in your career, this diploma is a great way to formalise your experience, and get the specialised skills and knowledge to make your career ambitions a reality.

If you are an existing worker or have experience in the related industry, please inform our enrolment consultants during your enrolment conversation. You may be eligible to enrol as an existing worker and complete your studies faster. Please note – limitations do apply.

What you'll learn

You’ll be covering all the essentials – drawing, conceptual, research and business skills as well as building your knowledge of materials and ways of working sustainably. By the end, you will have an extensive portfolio of work that you can proudly present to prospective employers and clients. During your studies, you will learn how to:

  • Create and develop concepts, understand and utilise colour and light.

  • Identify materials and construction techniques.

  • Understand the history and development of architectural styles and movements.

  • Research and recommend furniture, accessories, light fittings, hard materials and finishes, and soft furnishings.

  • Provide interior styling services to clients.

  • Develop a decoration proposal for a complex site.

  • Produce perspective drawings, plans and elevations.

  • Create technical drawings.

  • Use CAD applications to complete models and documentation.

  • Apply the creative design process to 2D and 3D forms.

  • Prepare drawings for heritage work and decorate interiors for restoration projects.

  • Work with clients and monitor and manage small business operations.

  • Source and specify decoration products.

  • Decorate residential interiors.

  • Evaluate a site for an interior design brief.

Learners submit a portfolio that showcases their ability to master the design process and their creativity throughout the course. They will also submit the visual diary that they have been developing throughout the course.

    Online delivery - online course content with the exception of assessments and work placement

    Blended delivery - both online course content and partial face to face requirements

    In class delivery - predominately face to face course content conducted at a specific location

Modules

Open Colleges has commissioned the development of comprehensive learning modules for each Study Period in the course. These have been written by industry experts to meet the specific needs of Open Colleges’ learners. The modules include content that addresses each aspect of the unit of competency. Learning activities are included for each key skill area.

Multi-media

Open Colleges will be augmenting the modules with additional instructional videos and other curated online resources. Links to web resources, included in modules, have been selected by subject matter experts to ensure learners have access to a broad range of current industry relevant content. The links include range videos, images, research articles and blogs created by industry practitioners.

Learning activities

Learning activities are included in each module to provide skills practice or reflection opportunities to apply key concepts addressed in each unit. These learning activities also offer the learners a chance to interact with their fellow learners, share their ideas on certain topics and provide feedback on other’s comments and ideas.
